Since 2007 Jo Ractliffe's photography has focused on the aftermath of the war in Angola.

Ractliffe writes: "For South Africans, Angola was perceived as a remote border in other places, where brothers and friends were part of their military service. Now, more than two decades since Namibia's independence and the withdrawal of the SADF (South African Defence Forces) troops from the area, the Border War' remains a matter of much ignorance and shame for some, including treason for some. During the realization of As Terras do Fim do Mundo, I was curious about whether the traces of the war found might be within the borders of South Africa. I was interested in exploring the idea of a militarized landscape. Instead of pointing to spaces connected to the usual South African military apparatus, I wanted to look for websites that were intricately connected to that war.

Ractliffe approved and photographed in three main locations: Pomfret, Kimberley (including Schmidtsdrift and Platfontein) and Reimvasmaak. All this was the place occupied by SADF during the mobilization of the war and its consequences. They also share stories of violence and dispossession during the apartheid era and, since the advent of democracy, of reconciliation and reparation. Ractliffe is interested in the intersection of these stories: how they affect now, in the current life of these seats
