Les Nuits de Place Blanche immerses us in the nightlife of Paris in the 1950s and 1960s, specifically in the transgender community of the district near Piazza Pigalle. Christer Strömholm, considered the father of contemporary photography in Sweden, portrays the characters in an intimate and exuberant way, either on the street or in the rooms of the hotels where they live. For the author, it is a work on the freedom of each person to choose his or her own life and identity that, over time, has become a set of moving memories of the weaknesses and strengths of the human being. In short, it is a series that exudes fragility and beauty and symbolizes very well what it means for Strömholm to work with photography: the possibility of delving into the great questions of life, such as love, death and human solitude.

This book has been co-published by the Fundació Foto Colectania and Editorial RM on the occasion of the exhibition The temptation to exist. Christer Strömholm | Anders Petersen presented at Foto Colectania from April to July 2015.
