The portraits in this book were taken by anonymous "lambelambe" photographers on the streets of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, without the intention of being seen by a general public.

The photographs were initially taken for private clients who needed portraits for administrative purposes. Today we have the opportunity to see these portraits thanks to the custom of the photographers to throw the negatives in the street. The negatives were printed once and then discarded in the sewer where they were found by the German artist Joachim Schmid, who recovered them over the course of ten years. For Schmid, this collection of portraits is a treasure.

The photographers used very simple equipment and processed the rolls and paper quickly, without considering a record of the work. Despite the unartistic process, or perhaps because of it, the images are as striking and as strong as many of the portraits of the masters of this genre. Together they make up a collective portrait of the city's randomly composed population and are at once a document of a bygone era, replaced by the cleanliness of the digital photography process, which leaves no garbage visible on the streets.
