Each year, an international jury in Kassel awards the Dummy Award to honour the best, previously unpublished photo book concepts. As a cooperation partner of the Fotobookfestival, the publishing house Kettler publishes the books of the first and second prize-winners.

Manuals contain a wealth of specialist knowledge on a wide range of topics and instructions for use offer practical solutions in every situation. Irish photographer Jan McCullough is fascinated by counselors. A book from the 1950s titled "How to make the Home you want" finally becomes the initial spark for an unusual project. Inspired by the suggestions to create a feel-good home, McCullough decides to rent an empty apartment in a suburb of Belfast and search the Internet for self-appointed experts to help her set up. How to make a home "is the Google inquiry, with which they finally set off a lively discussion between people who offered their support and willingly provided information. For two months the memos were collected and the origin of the new home was documented in photographs. The result was a kind of long-term study of living and working in a foreign house, which was ultimately not designed according to individual needs, but instead corresponded to the wishes of an anonymous mass.
