Spectacular, mysterious, elegant or grotesque, the skeletons of the vertebrates that populate the Earth today bear the traces of an evolution that spans several million years. This book tells the story of our time, a story recorded in these bones.

The theory of evolution presented by Charles Darwin in the 19th century has for the most part been confirmed and enriched by the discovery of genes and advances in life sciences, paleontology and embryology. This paper takes stock of this scientific reality. It offers a broad overview of the vertebrate sphere, the zoo group that we ourselves belong to. The relationship becomes evident when we look at the internal structure of animals, and helps us to understand the mechanisms of evolution and its various aspects.

More contemporary vertebrates presented in this book come from the collections of the Comparative Anatomy Gallery at the Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. They have been restored, sometimes rebuilt and freed from their metal structures.

This book, co-edited by the National Museum of Natural History, was created with the help of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, the Museum of Natural History of Marseille, the Museum of Natural History of Toulouse, the Fragonard Museum and the National Veterinary School of Alfort.
