Shirin Neshat (Iran, 1957) has lived and worked in the United States since 1974. His work has been exhibited in the world's leading museums and art centres, as well as at Documenta XI (2002) and the Whitney Museum Biennial (2000). In 1999 she won the Golden Lion at the XLVIII Venice Biennale and in 2009 she was awarded the Silver Lion at its Film Festival for the film Women without Men.

Shirin Neshat's work has been debated on the status of Muslim women, balancing the search for cultural identity with the distortions and prejudices they face in the West. Through her photographs and video projections she has explored how men and women are segregated in Muslim societies, projecting the construction and politicization of public space and the confinement of desire.
