35 years old at the time, he traveled to the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean to shoot this second feature of his, which at the end of a signal to the world the presence of an exceptional talent.

During the course of preparing the production, he compiled what he saw, read it, his many ideas and images into a scrapbook instead of a script. Paintings, film stills, letters, newspaper articles, scribbles, quotes from the novels, postcards, lines of dialogue, snapshots that guided him throughout the shooting of the film and that he continued - and finished - after returning to Lisbon.

This green covered notebook, brimming with collage and the dog's ears in his hands, became an autonomous object, a visual record of Costa's way of thinking.
