David Goldblatt is the most respected and important photographer in South Africa. His work in his native country has been engaged in critical research of South African society, through the apartheid years of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and in the most recent post-apartheid period. His photographs from South Africa are an eloquent statement about the social inequalities there. This monograph gathers works throughout his career, including recent unpublished material. With his images, Goldblatt makes us see and understand better a country of great complexity, in which the extremes often touch. However, the artist does not allow himself to be carried away by the game of opposites and the spectacle of the "great" events. His precise and receptive analysis of social and cultural structures and urban and rural displacements never takes him away from the human being and his daily condition.
