Cristóbal Hara is a Spanish photographer (born in 1946 in Madrid), who partly because he was the son of a German mother and had spent a lot of time outside Spain, has been interested in "taking Spanish photography, based on a Spanish pictorial and cultural tradition".

"Anyone who has no choice but to be a photographer, who knows that life is at stake on a single card, and here there are no excuses: either you take the pictures or you don't take them."

Biography

His father belonged to a prosperous Spanish family who had lived for generations in the Philippines. Her German mother died a few months after her birth and her father remarried an American woman. So Christopher spent his childhood in the Philippines, Germany, the United States and Spain.

He studied Law and Business Administration in Madrid, Hamburg and Munich. He decided to dedicate himself to photography, living in London in 1969 after learning about the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, so he abandoned his studies. His work was first exhibited at the traveling exhibition Three Photographers, organized by the Victoria & Albert Museum.

He collaborated with the agencies John Hillelson in London and Viva in Paris. He moved to Spain in 1980, and later collaborated with Cover agency in Madrid.

Until 1985, Hara had worked exclusively in black and white, but since then she has worked exclusively in color. He wanted to be a photojournalist, but his interest was not so much in the subjects as in the photographic language itself, which led to a crisis that was resolved at the moment he began to use colour, evolving towards a direction in which the boundaries between reality and fiction were no longer clear.

His photographs have been published in magazines such as Camera, Creative Camera, DU. Aperture, Photovisión and European Photography; as well as in the magazines of El País, La Vanguardia and El Semanal.

He is represented by the Marlborough galleries in Madrid and Jacob Witzenhausen in Amsterdam.

His work is present, among others, in the collections of institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
