Born in Brooklyn in 1922, Louis Stettner began taking photographs as a teenager in the 1930s and devoted almost eighty years of his life to photography. After serving in the Pacific as a photographer for the US Army during the Second World War, he moved to Paris in 1947. Throughout his life, he alternated between long periods living in France and the United States before settling permanently in Paris from 1990 until his death in 2016.

Straddling these two cultures, Stettner’s work incorporates elements of American street photography and French humanist photography. Trained at the New York school of the Photo League, he studied under Sid Grossman and was a close friend of Weegee. In Paris, the young photographer met Brassaï, who became his mentor and introduced him to the Parisian photography community. Stettner fused the French lyrical approach with the New York tradition of socially engaged photography to create his own version of humanism.
