Continuing the line of exhibitions dedicated to Photography begun in 2008, FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE presents, for the first time in Spain, a retrospective exhibition of the artist Gotthard Schuh. Already considered in the early 1930s as one of the most representative contemporary photojournalists of his native Switzerland, this photographer who wanted to be a painter developed a personal style that made him one of the greatest representatives of so-called poetic realism.

More than a hundred photographs by Gotthard Schuh show us the social commitment, but also the freedom and inner expression of one of the artists who targeted an entire generation of post-war European photographers, including Robert Frank and Werner Bischof, to name but a few of the most important.

His images bring us closer to the Europe of the 1930s and 1950s, to the rise of Nazism, but also to the exotic world of Southeast Asia, where he lived for eleven months.
