The idea of a study of Latin American photobooks originated at the first Latin American Photography Forum held at the Instituto Cultural Itaú in São Paulo en 2007. For the following three years, Horacio Fernández carried out extensive research in the major cities of Latin America, meeting with booksellers, scholars, collectors, and especially photographers, designers, and publishers. The quality and originality of the photobooks he found have made possible the publication of this book on the subject. Apart from the spanish edition by RM, the book has also been published in english by Aperture, in french by Images en Manoeuvres, and in portuguese by Cosac Naify.

Latin American Photobooks looks at one hundred and fifty works of great richness and complexity that reveal the enormous contribution made by Latin America to the history of the photobook, as well as some of the best kept secrets in the entire history of photography.

This is a critical study that provides important information not only about the authors but also about the social, cultural, and political context of the photobooks presented, which are lavishly reproduced in this volume. These works constitute the most important productions from the origins of the photobook in Latin America to the present day.

The reader will find displayed in thematic and chronological order the most outstanding photobooks of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and Venezuela.
