Francisco Guardado began his photographic career in 2015 after retiring, and since then he has dedicated his time to documenting the lives of sheep and goat herders in the Campiña Morón-Marchena region of Seville, where he lives. Paco uses photography to preserve the lives and work of these shepherds who carry on their backs an age-old tradition passed down from generation to generation; men and women who, as the social anthropologist Estefanía Fernández Fernández tells us in the text that accompanies this book, are bearers of culture and managers of the territory through which they walk.

The day Paco showed us his project, the first thing we thought was that it was an honest work and that it also drew from a tradition, in this case from the humanist photography that laid the foundations for documentary reportage. His images conveyed a respect for what the camera records, and we were captivated by his search for a lyrical language that allowed him to ennoble to the layman's eye what he showed without falling into Manichaeism, paying special attention to gestures and looks. We also identify with his formal austerity, starting with the distance at which the photographs are taken. Surely the author's age has influenced this approach, which is as delicate as it is respectful. At a time when old age has disappeared, the continuous present has replaced the future and speed is the natural state of the human being, Paco, with a whole life on his shoulders, has come to tell us about the silent lives of those who have walked alongside their herds since time immemorial, caring for the animals and the landscape, that is to say, about what was and what should continue to be. And we can only feel proud and grateful to publish their first book.

When its protagonists, the shepherds, claim the right of passage of their herds through the territory, they are preserving the physical memory of the place, just as the photographer aims to fix the visual memory that allows the preservation of that which can be lost. This was probably the first function of photography, and it is still valid today. Ultimately, it is about bequeathing to future generations a document so that they remember where they come from and who they are.
