Joan Fontcuberta is an artist who has been accompanied by theoretical reflection throughout his career and, at the same time, for more than thirty years, many analysts have turned their gaze on him, shedding light on his work from very different points of view. In this crossfire of discourses, Fontcuberta has been the object of intense criticism that leaves no chink of his work in the dark. This clarity contrasts, however, with what forms the essence of his works: a consummate art of the confusion of genres and messages, an immoderate taste for equivocation related to the degree of reality of phenomena. The artist would thus have something of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: a pedagogue of our modern world and at the same time a virtuoso in the art of setting traps for reason. Everything would therefore be in order in the life of a dialectical artist who has placed photography and, more broadly, the image at the centre of his discourse. However, it is useful once again to state explicitly the intentions of a work that manages to make sense stutter, to consider Fontcuberta from a certain distance. In what history does he inscribe himself today? By broadening the point of view and favouring a kaleidoscope of entrances to his universe, we realise that the artist is in dialogue with profound ideas of the modern age: the strength of the discourses that determine our view of the world, the place of the artist in society, the role of humour in the face of authority. All these themes are present in a work that resists classification.
