The book  José Suárez: Uns ollos vivos que pensan  (Living Eyes That Think) is the definitive catalogue and the most comprehensive work published to date on the life and career of the Galician photographer José Suárez (1902–1974).

Originally published by the Cidade da Cultura de Galicia Foundation and reissued as a trilingual volume (Galician, Spanish, and English), this 383-page book serves as an in-depth monographic study of a key artist of the 20th-century photographic avant-garde.
The title draws on a famous phrase by writer José Bergamín, who described Suárez’s gaze as that of "living eyes that think," highlighting its profound intellectual and humanistic depth.

1. Structure and Photographic Content
The book’s visual core comprises 217 iconic images that structure the photographer’s life and career stages both chronologically and thematically. It is organized primarily into three major sections reflecting his evolution:

Early Series and Avant-Garde: Showcases his break from the costumbrismo (local color/traditional genre scenes) of the era, influenced by European movements such as New Objectivity. A highlight is the renowned photograph of the boy with the model of the Javiota dorna boat.

Exile Period: Covers the series produced following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, a time when Suárez traveled across the Americas and Asia. It includes his striking coverage of the Argentine Pampas, his cultural immersion in Japan, and remote landscapes in South America.

Return: Documents his return to Spain in 1959. This section compiles his iconic Mariñeiros series (Galician sailors, portraying the sea with both raw honesty and dignity), as well as journeys through La Mancha and Ibiza, the Touros bullfighting series (1967), and his European photo-reportage work as a correspondent (such as the Glyndebourne series). Gallery of Intellectuals: The book features intimate, psychologically powerful portraits of the author's friends and contemporaries—major cultural figures such as Miguel de Unamuno, Rafael Alberti, José Bergamín, and Eduardo Blanco Amor.
