TERRA FERMA takes as its starting point the author’s native island, Mallorca, and a long-matured idea: to journey through the island’s interior in search of landscapes transformed by human activity. Gas stations, roads, hotels, and buildings appear in the images as marks or open wounds upon the territory. The black-and-white photographs, rendered in a restrained range of grays, formally recall the framing traditions of New Topographics landscape photography, though here they are enveloped in a subdued, almost hazy tone that reinforces the sense of a persistent trace upon the skin of the landscape.

The project is structured around a central paradox: the millions of visitors who arrive on the island each year in search of an idyllic landscape participate, directly or indirectly, in the degradation of that very environment. Terra Ferma positions itself precisely at this point of friction between desire, consumption, and destruction.

To bring these ideas into material form, Amengual collaborates with the Italian designer Fiorenza Pinna, together shaping a book that stands out both for its formal conception and its material process. The photographs included in the publication were first printed and then torn by the author himself, exposing the materiality of the photographic support. These broken fragments — or even mere remnants — were subsequently re-photographed. The result is a series of images presented in a classical arrangement, yet floating against solid-color backgrounds that shift from browns and ochres to reddish and yellow tones, hues inspired both by the sunset and by the colors of Mallorcan soil.

The book-object further reinforces this discourse through its very structure. Terra Ferma dispenses with a conventional cover and is constructed from a perfectly folded and sewn interior that allows the book to be turned upon itself. Its soft, delicate, even fragile appearance acts as a direct metaphor for the vulnerability of the landscape and the ecosystems that compose it.
