From Gorizia to Caracas; from the Cuban Revolution to ideological disillusionment; from major cities to social divisions, Paolo Gasparini’s (Italy, 1934) journey traverses the complexities and tensions of Latin America and Europe. For him, photography is not merely a craft; it is a means of engaging with the world through a critical lens that takes a stand and refuses to be indifferent.

His journey began in a small photography club, amidst specialist magazines and the influence of Italian neorealism. A restless traveller and persevering photographer, he emigrated to Venezuela and developed an extensive body of work on architecture and the urban landscape, whilst sharpening his gaze, which inevitably focuses on the social issues and contradictions of our time. His images are invitations to reflect: they question, challenge and denounce.

Convinced that certain images ‘bite’, Gasparini uses photobooks, audiovisual works and photo murals to craft metaphors and establish moving visual narratives. After more than 70 years of career and experience, and ‘not because I’m old’, he asserts that ‘photography is dead’, as it has been turned into ‘a pastime of the Society of the Spectacle’. He bids it farewell amidst memories, ideas and a meticulous selection of images that invite us to continue thinking.

His work is represented in the world’s most important collections: The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris; Casa de las Américas, Havana; Fondation A Stichting, Brussels; Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris; Fundación Mapfre, Spain; Fundación Televisa, Mexico; the National Art Gallery, Caracas; George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; Hermès International, Paris; the International Centre of Photography (ICP), New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Caracas; the Reina Sofía National Art Centre, Madrid; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and The New York Public Library, New York, amongst others.
