One morning, I noticed an improvised ‘cover’ over a teapot. It was a bit clumsy, a little akward, and endearing: a lovely, everyday tablescape.
From then on, each morning, with my heart beating just a bit faster, I’d sneak into the kitchen with a camera in my hand.
― from Motoyuki Shitamichi’s “Mother's Cover”

Motoyuki Shitamichi’s photobook “Mother's Cover” documents the various improvised tools used by his mother-in-law to cover cups, mugs, jugs, teapots, coffee flasks, and pans. In 2012, following his wedding, Shitamichi moved from Tokyo to Aichi, into his wife’s family home. As he gradually became part of the family, he noticed a small, quirky habit of his mother-in-law and began photographing the different lids she improvised each morning. This quiet ritual continued until Shitamichi had the opportunity to exhibit the series and asked for her permission.
The second part of the book consists of photographs taken years later, after Shitamichi and his wife had a baby, when he noticed an improvised cover made by his wife one morning...

In March 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake struck […] I saw how easily the ordinary could vanish, swept away in a moment, and it amde me feel fiercely attached to the small, everyday details of life. Experiencing such loss gave me more feelings towards the people close to me and to the things around me. I hope you understand what I mean.
