Amsterdam-based artist Jackie Mulder transforms photography into a site of resistance and repair. Growing up in a small religious village, she first escaped through sprawling, obsessive drawings — a formative strategy that still drives her work. Today, in her ongoing series Thought Trails, Mulder begins with her own photographs, then intervenes through cutting, layering, and reconfiguration. The image becomes a material field to be dismantled and rebuilt.

Her process embraces unpredictability: chance is treated as a co-author rather than a threat to control. The resulting works occupy a space between photography, collage, and drawing — intimate topographies where memory and movement leave visible traces. Mulder’s practice challenges the boundaries of the photographic medium and reflects a deeper trajectory of self-determination. Each piece is both an experiment and an act of healing, expanding the image into a terrain of freedom.
