Carnage Visor VVV presents a visual record of the extensive unpublished video and documentary material of the artist Iñaki Garmendia. Spread over 120 pages with 23 documents as bookmarks, the book selects and groups heterogeneous materials in a continuous sequence based on four case studies: Faux départs: Mariaratz/Arkaka [also called “video of the dam”], Villas Vascas, Fourteen-Years-Old-Runaway-Boy and Txitxarro/Bolueta Front 242.

As in his video works, the relationships that Garmendia establishes in the book between different materials -photographs, stills, texts, photocopies- and the particular sequencing of their contents -from the Basque landscape and its architecture to the nocturnal recording of a body inside a car or the series of photographs of the Txitxarro discotheque- activate multiple readings. We witness a series of events, some real and others directed, whose meaning is interrupted. Faced with the aesthetic and referential universe created by Garmendia, the reader's perception is decisive in establishing a narrative that provides continuity.

The publication includes a fifth case study separate from the book, forming an appendix. These are the images of the intervention and exhibition project “Tramar lo gótico. N-634”, carried out in collaboration with BeAr Architects in Travesía de Tívoli, Bilbao, in November 2023.

Iñaki Garmendia (Ordizia, 1972) belongs to a generation of Basque artists who have developed their work in a context marked by paradoxical trends: cultural nationalism and globalization have provided the ingredients for an aesthetic that often superimposes heterogeneous meanings. Video, music, youth subcultures and certain industrial products favor the tension between the multiple readings of their work. His processes are often based on the creation of derivatives, versions of cultural objects to which he is secretly linked and on which he operates on the basis of a logic of attrition. This is particularly evident in his video production of the last 20 years. The extensive footage with which he usually presents his works gives the impression of plunging us into the same event that the camera observes. Despite this, his works are opaque, lacking a traditional narrative and settled in a kind of abstraction that recalls one of the most explicit mandates of expanded cinema. Likewise, his penchant for punk-derived aesthetics gives him a taste for resistance to orality. As a whole, Garmendia's works avoid an immediate ascription of meaning and reject any instrumentalization of pre-loaded images and scenes.
