En público . Cristóbal Hara

En público is the ninth book in the Cristóbal Hara collection: The Banal Essays.

"If you become a public figure you run the risk of being turned into a statue (or a caricature), and if you become very famous, they may put your face on a wimp and burn you at carnival time. If you are a woman, you will probably be stripped naked before being exhibited in public.

The photographer's natural place is behind the camera, not in front of it. The profession of photographer is not the most appropriate one to make you famous, and just because you are known outside it doesn't mean you will be respected by your peers. How many people know who Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Joan Colom or William Eggleston are? Any second-rate footballer or singer will always be more famous than the best photographers.

Shoemaker to your shoes; photographer to your photographs".

In public . Cristóbal Hara

The language of photography, and in particular the language of photography with documentary ambitions, is subject to multiple rules and conventions. Cristóbal Hara's work revolves around the search for alternatives to the conventions of his time. In Los ensayos banales, the essay format, more concise than that of a book, allows him to isolate and deal with different aspects of the photographer's craft, illustrating them with images, some known and others unpublished, taken during his more than forty years of work.

Cristóbal Hara was born in Madrid in 1946. After spending his early years in the Philippines, Germany and the United States, he settled in Spain in 1980. In 1985 he definitively abandoned black and white to devote himself exclusively to colour, a change that marked a turning point in his search for his own language, with a clear influence of the Spanish pictorial and cultural tradition.

In 2022 he was awarded the National Photography Prize by the Ministry of Culture.
