For over forty years, Roger Ballen has been a major artist on the contemporary scene, exploring the meanders of his unconscious through the elaboration of settings that oscillate between dream and reality. His strange works invite the spectator to enter his mind for an extreme journey: the exploration of the recesses of his soul and his secret impulses.

For this thirteenth title in the Des oiseaux collection, the South African photographer has produced a selection of photographs, most of them previously unpublished, especially for the book. In closed universes, where graffiti, signs, shadows and fragments accumulate, stories are played out that shake up our gaze. The line between fantasy and drama is blurred. The non-logical world of an Alice in Wonderland, mischievous and sometimes not so nice, seems to come alive before our eyes. Birds wisely placed among a doll's décor, emerging from behind a pasteboard wall, evolving among toys abandoned and broken by a disgruntled child, or playing at balancing on balloons, making friends with teddy bears, real or drawn: all participate in the artist's amused delirium.

This book is part of the Des oiseaux collection, which celebrates, through the eyes of various artists, their immense presence in a world where they are now fragile. Ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre provides an original essay to accompany each set of photographs. Other titles in the collection include: Albarrán Cabrera, Graciela Iturbide, Leila Jeffreys, Rinko Kawauchi, Michael Kenna, Christophe Maout, Byung-Hun Min, Yoshinori Mizutani, Paolo Pellegrin, Bernard Plossu, Pentti Sammallahti and Terri Weifenbach.
