Almost like a road movie, The Americans was gestated during 1955 and 1956. Published in 1958, it quickly became the most influential photography book in the world. Robert Frank, who travelled along the highways and byways of 48 states taking pictures, envisioned this project through his relationship with the Beat Generation, after encounters with personalities like Bill Brandt, Walter Evans and the poet Allen Ginsberg. A parade in New Jersey, a funeral in South Carolina, shop windows in Washington, a cocktail party in New York, highways in Idaho, a picnic in California, Arizona, Tennessee, Utah… The book is a collection of snapshots which are still as powerful and valid as they were fifty years ago.
