Peru brings together nearly 90 images by Martín Chambi and Juan Manuel Castro Prieto, creating a dialogue between historical and contemporary images.

In 1990, Juan Manuel Castro Prieto (Madrid, 1958) travelled to Peru for the first time to carry out an assignment from the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid: to make the photographic copies of what was to be the first retrospective exhibition of Martín Chambi in Spain. But this assignment was beyond the professional scope. For Castro Prieto, the discovery of the work of the Peruvian master had meant "a turning point in his way of seeing photography". On the other hand, Peru had always been a mythical setting for him.

For ten years Castro Prieto returned to Peru on numerous occasions, during which time his photography matured and acquired its own grammar, refining the use of photography as an instrument of self-knowledge. The images resulting from these trips were presented in book form and exhibition at PHotoEspaña 2001, under the title "Peru, journey to the sun".

The emotional and professional closeness to the figure of Chambi and his family made the idea of paying homage to his work grow. Castro Prieto wanted to put himself in the shoes of the Peruvian photographer but he didn't want to do it by mimicking his style; he didn't even want to adopt the chromatic textures of black and white. To make the different styles of both more visible, Castro Prieto has chosen to photograph in colour; this allows him to maintain coherence with his own work - mostly made with negative coloured plates - and, on the other hand, to highlight the time span of more than eighty years between them.

This project, carried out between 2009 and 2010, is a semiotic visual chronicle of the scenarios photographed by Martín Chambi. It attends to the signs of social life in the Cuzco region, both those that unfold in rural and urban landscapes and those that become visible in nature. Equipped with a large-format camera (20 x 25 cm.) Castro tackles these subjects from a colour perspective, intervening on the focal planes to underline the fragility of reality and memory in his photographic representation and using points of view that radically differ from the documentary records that characterise Chambi's work.

The book is published by La Fábrica Editorial and DKV Seguros and is the catalogue of the exhibition with the same name as the Centro de Arte Tomás y Valiente of Fuenlabrada City Council will be exhibiting from 6 October to 15 January 2012.

Juan Manuel Castro Prieto (Madrid, 1958), a scientist by profession and a lover of photography, has managed to combine his two passions to become one of the most sought-after, demanding and subtle photographers in Europe. Castro makes his photographic works from the nomadic attitude of the wandering artist. He has travelled, and always left his testimony with a particular view of what he owns, to countries such as Peru, Ethiopia and Morocco. He has published books such as Peru, viaje al sol and Cuenca en la mirada, with the writer Andrés Trapiello, and has held exhibitions in spaces such as the Musée D'Orsay in Paris or the Centro de Arte Teatro Fernán Gómez in Madrid.
