Tierra Mágica is the third book in the house about carnival and the rituals and masquerades of northwest Spain. Every year, the sound of bells emerges from the mists that surround the villages and try to announce the end of winter, and distant cries and music can be heard. As we approach, we begin to distinguish walking trees, fantastic birds and more disturbing figures. These processions seem to come from far away, from the depths of time, from under the earth. Photographer Yannick Cormier's book transcribes the astonishment that seizes us when faced with these characters, both frightening and attractive.

The book is built on a rhythm that alternates black and white photographs (taken in medium format on film) of misty landscapes and sudden apparitions. These masquerades have survived the centuries and wars with little change. They can be seen now as the resurgence of an animistic world preceding the Christian expansion. One could almost say that these costumes embody the pagan earth, in opposition to the divine sky: all the wild nuances are reinterpreted in the animal, vegetable or chimerical finery.

A parade of sensations follows, oscillating between dream and nightmare, with Yannick Cormier opening the ball.

The black and white silver photographs are accompanied by a text by Candice Moise, an academic and specialist in the study of masks.
