The photographer Virxilio Vieitez was born in Soutelo de Montes (Pontevedra) in 1930, and in those years he worked as a mechanic in the Pyrenees, where he bought his first camera, a Kodak 6x9 format camera, to start photographing the landscapes and portraying his fellow horseworkers. Later he moved to Catalonia, working in Palamós as an employee of the photographer Julio Pallí. In 1955 he returned to Soutelo de Montes to establish himself professionally, working with clients from all over Terra de Montes in different villages and towns such as Cerdedo, Avión, Beariz, Forcarei...

Our portraits, characterized by frontality and aestheticism, call attention to Virxilio's exceptional ability to capture the great expressiveness of two small photographs, always presenting them with great dignity. On occasion they bring to mind Paul Strand, August Sander, Walker Evans or Diana Arbus and Richard Avedon, both of whom he has never referred to before.the work of Virxilio Vieitez was studied as part of the research project "Dous aspectos da fotografía en Galiza. 1950-65" financed by the University of Vigo, with the collaboration of the photographer Keta Vieitez
