This book brings together the great retrospective of the American photographer Henry Wessel that will be shown in February 2022 at the Centro José Guerrero in Granada and which includes a careful selection of his most representative photographs. A journey to the American West through the camera of this enormous photographer in whose photographs light and shapes take centre stage.

Wessel's visual sensibility captures spontaneous, everyday images, with great attention to quiet, simple scenes, sometimes adding touches of irony and humour. Wessel is best known for his black-and-white images taken during his travels through various American states in search of subjects to photograph. Of particular note are his photographs of car parks and bathers.

The book also includes illustrative images by Henry Wessel's contemporaries, such as Ed Ruscha, Lee Friedlander, Diane Airbus, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Nicholas Nixon, Robert Adams and Walker Evans.

Henry Wessel (USA, 1942 - 2018) is one of a group of photographers brought together in the influential 1975 George Eastman House exhibition New Topographics at Rochester's George Eastman House, whose work focuses on the relationship between nature and civilisation. His photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, among others.
