Context and narration in photography is a basic photography manual in its communicative aspect.  The book explores those elements of the photographic medium that are necessary to convey ideas or tell stories. Whether with a single image or a series or set of images, photographic language uses context and narration to construct and develop its discourse, capture the public's attention and enable them to relate in some way to the story and its intention. Taking as a starting point some concepts traditionally associated with language and communication -emitter, message, audience, narrative discourse, signs, symbols and meta-information-, the reader will find in these pages the keys to achieving effective visual communication and obtaining a good photograph: from general issues such as the brief of a project, the theme or the style, to specific techniques and resources such as the sequential story, the visual metaphor or the captions.

The theoretical content of the book, brief and concise, is accompanied by numerous images and is exemplified by the experiences of internationally renowned photographers. Each chapter also closes with a case study, practical exercises and a brief summary. In short, a basic guide aimed at photography students, junior photographers and amateurs who wish to delve deeper into the concept and message of the photographic work.

Maria Short is a photographer, writer and professor of photography at the University of Brighton, UK.
