António Júlio Duarte has been photographing casino's lobbies in Macau for the last 10 years.

Shot at night, with a medium format camera and a flash, often in jetlagged mode, the lobbies became Duarte’s personal territory. The absurd luxury of the places combined with the strangeness of the objects, and the absence of human presence, creates a strong dreamlike feeling. We are led through a labyrinth, as if floating.

This work is both an important document about the little seen reality of Casino’s in Macau today, and a very personal reflection about East and West, about how to relate to the world through photography.

António Júlio Duarte (b. Lisbon, 1965)

Studied photography at Ar.Co between 1985 and 1989, and at Royal College of Art (London, UK) as a Gulbenkian scholar in 1991.

In 1990 he was awarded the Kodak Award in Portugal and participated in the group exhibition European Kodak Award at Les Rencontres d’ Arles.

Since then his photographic work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Portugal and abroad at places like Centro Português de Fotografia (Porto), Museum fur Photographie (Braunschweig) and Tokyo Photographic Center.

Selected Press on WHITE NOISE:

"White Noise is both well edited and designed, the large black circle on the front cover evoking the most surreal image in the book and also reminds me of the black monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is a skillfully evocative collection of images, a fantastic example of a body of work that draws the viewer right in and conveys a specific feeling throughout the well-crafted sequencing." - Horacio Fernández in Photo-Eye

"There are no people in any of these photographs, but that is not to say they are devoid of humanity. Only humans can envision and execute such lavishness, borne out of all the iterations of desire that are unique to our species. Shooting medium format film with a harsh flash, Duarte tempers the casinos' decadent absurdity with the aesthetic of a tourist's snapshot, placing his own humanity in the pictures as well." - John Mahoney in American Photo Magazine

"Now, I’ve already tipped my hand several times that I love weird/odd imagery, and sci-fi infused imagery all the more. I must be easily seduced by shiny, flash-driven, gleaming photographs, so that’s one of my tells right there. I’ll spare you one more Murakami/Parallel Universe reference, but man do I have a soft spot for that style. This book has it in spades. There are no people, the use of flash dominates, and boy do these photographs shine. Crystal chandeliers, gold-leaf encrusted sculptures, porcelain goddesses, mirrored-disco balls, metallic drapes, it’s all in there." - Jonathan Blaustein in APhotoEditor

- Sérgio B. Gomes in Ípsilon
