Overwhelmed by digital technology and displaced from its essential functions, photography has become something else. In the face of confusion or blindness, Joan Fontcuberta reveals here what remains: the remains of authenticity, the remains of the documentary, the remains of values that made photography shape the modern look and contribute to our happiness.

Faithful to the principle that a photograph is worth a thousand lies, Fontcuberta elucidates the nature of the new (digital) photograph and its losses. Critical reflections and poetic evocations are derived from this that trace the efforts of a post-modern Pandora's camera that no longer limits itself to describing our environment but aims to put order and transparency in feelings, memory and life.

The art of light now aspires to be the art of lucidity.

This is a new paperback edition of the selection of sixteen essays that won the 2011 National Essay Award.
