The Editorial Factory and the Botín Foundation co-publish Europe: America, a work that confronts two key moments of his artistic career through the juxtaposition of two of his series: New Europe (1986-1992) and A shimmer of possibility (2004-2006). The first one is the result of a journey through Europe, and the second one is from the United States.

The publication includes photographs, diptychs and polyptychs taken between 1986 and 2006. The New Europe series, developed between 1988 and 1993 on repeated journeys through nine European countries, from Germany and Northern Ireland to Italy and Spain, explores the tensions the artist and others felt about the future of Europe, as well as its recent past, from World War II to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Graham researched the medium in which he worked and culture in transition, challenging photography itself and investigating new ways of presenting images: mounting his large-format and color photographs on aluminum plates, showing them individually, as well as on diptychs and triptychs, without paying attention to conventional installation standards.

For his part, A shimmer of possibility (2004-2006) is targeting the United States, where he currently resides. The twelve volumes that make up the series (in Spanish, the flash of a possibility) embark us on an apparent journey through Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Louisiana, Minneapolis, New England, New York, New Orleans, North Dakota, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Texas; yet, at the same time, they transport us nowhere. The images reflect the indeterminacy of suburbs, traffic intersections, or shopping centers on the outskirts of a city. Graham chooses public spaces in the United States such as residential streets, gas stations, bus stops, drugstores and liquor stores... transit areas, public places that are accessible to everyone. What Graham's images convey to us is a subtle meditation on the absence of civic dimension that characterizes such places. More than an agora and a public space for civil assembly and recognition, Graham's streets and verges serve as a backdrop for people living in isolation, passing alongside each other as if they were in parallel but distinct worlds.

The book brings together the works of an exhibition of the same name, curated by Vicente Todolí, which will be held at the Fundación Botín de Santander Exhibition Hall from 7 October to 8 January 2012.
